Denmark – the first country to halt its COVID-19 vaccination programme

Denmark has become the first country to halt its Covid vaccination programme, saying it did so because the virus is now under control.
Denmark’s Covid vaccination campaign began shortly after Christmas 2020. Health authorities say about 4.8 million citizens have been vaccinated and more than 3.6 million have received booster shots.
At the same time, many people have been infected since the Omicron variant became the dominant strain of the virus, suggesting a high level of immunity in the population.
The public can still get vaccinated in the spring and summer if they wish, and vaccination sites will remain open across the country.
Denmark’s suspension of its vaccination program comes as the global COVID-19 situation remains mixed. Europe and the US have abandoned most restrictions on COVID-19, but China is still in place (or considering) a lockdown as the virus spreads through major cities such as Shanghai and Beijing.
However, the Danish Health and Drugs Agency did not completely cancel its vaccination schedule, instead of saying that another COVID-19 vaccination may be needed in the autumn as the virus continues to mutate.
